Lodge Activities

At Hideaway Cove Lodge, you have access to some  of  the finest outdoor adventures in the world.  Do you want  to kayak in  front of a mile-wide glacier?  Hike into and  explore the alpine tundra?  Take a bush plane and spend a day serving  coastal brown bears?  All this  is possible at your doorstep,  and no prior experience is  necessary.  Perhaps  you  are looking for a more casual pace.....how about strolling among  wildflowers in a glacier valley, taking a boat tour to historic Halibut Cove, or gliding silently in a sea kayak, looking for nesting eagles?   When it comes to daily activities,  you can explore on your own or book one of our  lodge packages, which have something for everyone.

World Class Hiking at your doorstep:
Guests have direct access to the following destinations, (hiking times are one way) :

  • Glacier lake, one hour;
  • Glacier valley, 2 hours;
  • Remote beachcombing, 3 hours;
  • Glacier Ice, 5 hours
  • Alpine tundra, 3 hours;
  • Salmon stream, 5 hours;
  • Beach exploring, one hour.

Wildlife viewing:
The surrounding forests, mountains, and ocean  are home to moose, black  bear, bald eagles, sea otters, seals,  porpoise and whales.  Lodge guests have a great opportunity to see our resident eagles, otters, seals and porpoise.  We also offer guided trips to see whales, bears, rare birds, otters, and more. 
 
Photography:
The lodge sits in an incredible location.  The post-card scenery is some of the finest in the world. Wildflowers galore. In addition, there is a glacier lake just a one-hour hike from the lodge.
 
Birding
Birders will love the location of the lodge, which gets visits from sea birds and forest dwellers including Spruce Grouse and Northern Three-toed Woodpeckers.  We can also arrange a birding tour on Kachemak Bay.
 
Beach Combing
Guests can stroll the rocky shoreline at the lodge when the tide is out.  The tides here vary as much as 28 vertical feet, every eight hours!  It is an incredibly rich intertidal zone. At the very low tides, you will discover sea stars, chitons, mussels, anemones, tube worms, and colorful kelp. 
 
Berry Picking
From mid-summer on, there are lots of berries to pick!  Blueberry, Raspberry, and Salmonberry to name a few.
 
Fishing:
The lodge has complementary fishing gear for shore fishing.  You may catch dolly varden or bottom fish.  Fishing licenses are required.  For guided fishing, see our guided trips below.
 
Relaxing in the lodge
The unique, spacious yurt is a fine place to sit by the fire, read from our alaskan library,  journal your adventures, or simply enjoy the views.
 
Enjoy the seaside deck
Soak into a rocking chair as you watch for wildlife and enjoy the breathtaking views across the water. 

Hike the hillside
Our observatory sits 200 feet above the water. Simply enjoy the views or get creative with our complimentary art supplies.

Soak in the sauna
treat yourself to our authentic, wood-fired sauna in the evenings.
 
Sit by a campfire
There is just something about a campfire.......lodge guests enjoy complimentary Smore fixings.

Glacier Kayaking and Hiking: 8  hours
 (included free in all lodge packages) $140/person 

Experience a different kind of "rush hour" as you paddle your kayak in a glacier carved lake and enjoy hiking in a pristine, glacier-carved valley.  

Historic Halibut Cove, by sea kayak!:  3-4 hours,  
(included free with 3-night lodge package)    $110/person

The quaint community of Halibut Cove awaits you.... You will see the finest scenery and also hear interesting stories of this historic place.  If time and tides permit, visit Alaska's only floating coffee shop. In addition to the sea kayaking, you also go beach combing on a remote pebble beach.

Brown Bear Viewing: 7 to 8 hours, From $600/person
Spend a day in the company of trained guides, observing and learning about the Alaskan brown bear(at a safe distance of course!!).

Coastal Tour By Boat: 2 hours   $75/person

This is a great opportunity to view and photograph our favorite wild neighbors – endearing sea otters and nesting bald eagles. You may also see porpoise, whales, sea lions, seals and sea birds including Puffins, Harlequins and Oystercatchers.

Birding tour by boat:  2 hours   $75/person

Join an local naturalist for a birding tour on Kachemak Bay.   Trips include a stop at Gull Island, the largest rookery in the area.  You may see Kittlitz's Murrelets, Aleutian Terns, Red-faced Cormorants, horned and tufted Puffins, Harlequins  Oystercatchers and many others.  Time observing these unique species is unhurried.

Glacier Hopping Flightseeing Adventure: 2 hours  $300/person

An incredible experience!  A floatplane pickup at the lodge followed by an amazing flight through the Kenai Mountains and over numerous glaciers.  In addition to the breathtaking scenery, watch for mountain goats, moose, and black bear.  Land on a remote glacier lake and explore, photograph, and learn about these "incredible rivers of ice".   

Whale Watching  $150/person

A full-day whale-watching tour,  taking you to lower Cook inlet, the whales' rich feeding grounds.  You may see Humpback, Minke and Orcas. In addition, you will see a variety of marine wildlife.

Halibut Fishing: Full-day $250/person,   Half-day $150/person

Popular and predictable,  Halibut fishing here is the best in the world. Trophies weigh 100 pounds or more with the average fish between 25 to 50 pounds. Very fine eating.  All fishing gear, bait, and guide provided.  We can also arrange processing, packaging, freezing, and shipping.

Homer is famous for its halibut fishing charters are available for fishing trips on and across the bay, and salmon runs are also accessible at the Fishin' Hole on the Homer Spit. Fishing licenses are required for any fishing, even clamming. If you've come to Homer to fish, contact the Homer Chamber of Commerce for some of the finest Halibut charter operators around. Coal Point Trading Company, on the Homer Spit, will process, freeze, and ship your catch.
